I'd like to schedule an appointment. It's my back- the pain is just not bearable anymore.

[ Two hours later, Dr. Holt calls back. His voice is professional, lightly Cuban-accented, and relatively monotone. ]

Mr. Kent. Is this an urgent matter? [ He pauses. ] I could see you for an appointment later this week if you are able to wait -- but if this is an emergency you may prefer urgent care.

[A pause on Clark's end, as if actually considering if he can stand the pain. He doesn't want to make it sound too urgent, mostly in case he's sent to another doctor who can see him right away- or worse, make him postpone a schedule with someone that really needs it.

So he decides it's better to wait.]

I can wait until later this week, it's not an emergency.

[ Dr. Holt hums quietly, taking a moment himself to consult his schedule. ]

Technically, I'm supposed to have a referral in order to accept new patients, but I'll make an exception. I have an opening on Thursday the 23rd, if you can make it then. This is for the consultation, mind; if you require surgery that'll be another appointment.

That works perfectly. And with a little luck it won't get to surgery.

[The relief in his voice isn't even faked. He'd been afraid he'd clam up or refuse to see him... and he wouldn't have blamed him, considering what his husband was going through. But with a little luck he'll find out more about how he feels about that in a couple days.]

I'm very grateful for this, Doctor.

[ His voice is indeed clipped and professional. ]

If you feel it's not urgent and you're still able to move around and walk, I don't expect surgery to be necessary. Still, do me a favor and keep a journal of where and when the pain flares up the most and we can review your symptoms when you come in.

[ As the appointment time is between two others Dr. Holt has that day, Clark may find himself waiting about ten minutes past his scheduled time. The doctor is running a little bit late, the receptionist will tell him, but he should be right with you. ]

[Clark smiles at the receptionist, assuring her it's fine and that he'll wait. He knew this could happen, he's just been crossing his fingers hoping his vist will not delay the visit to someone who really needs it. He makes a mental note to keep it short.

He's tapping the notebook he brought with him with a pen... when he isn't chewing on said pen. A habit Lois tries to break, but Lois isn't here now.]

Recently we've gotten a hold of some information regarding Captain Holiday and I'm trying to make sense out of it. You are of course free to call it off any time you want but I'd like you to see it first.

[ He exhales. ]

... I might be able to squeeze you in between patients around lunch on Thursday, if it's urgent.

[He's about to tell him it's not actually urgent, but he bites his tongue. He doesn't want this to drag on, and the sooner Holt knows the better. And if they get information out of it then that's a huge plus.]

I could arrange about twenty-five minutes at 1PM, if that would be convenient for you.

It would. Thank you, Doctor. [He knows Holt will want to see it and he'll make those minutes worth his time, he just doubts he'll be happy about it.

But he's still there on time- 10 minutes early, actually.]

[ Dr. Holt is still in with a patient when Clark arrives, but at five to 1 he steps out of the office.]

[ She clears her throat some. ] Thank you very much for returning my call. If you have a few spare moments I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions. Your name came up in a conversation recently.

[ Hm. He clears his throat. ]

As long as it's brief I suppose I can spare some time. Although I should mention right now I don't do medical evaluations over the phone.

Do you expect that will be necessary? If so I'll have to check my schedule and see when my next available appointment is, I think I have had some cancellations recently.
